Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC),University of Calicut, one of the pioneering University teaching and research department for Mass Communication in Kerala was set up in 1978 with a one-year Bachelor Degree programme in Journalism (BJ). Given the demand from the diverse communication fields, the Department upgraded its programme to Master's in Communication and Journalism (MCJ) in 1986. In 1995, the Department started PhD. Programme. Taking cues from the paradigm shift in communication sector in the early 1990s, it introduced specializations in Business journalism, Technical communication, and Corporate Communication. In 2010, choice-based credit semester system was introduced with new generation courses and inter departmental option facility. Since 2012, the Department has been publishing a refereed research journal titled’ Communication and Journalism Research’.
Objectives
The course is structured to help students acquire skills which would enable them to work in different media like newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, Online Media, public relations, advertising and also in research. Though extensive hands-on-training is provided in print media, the course also provides an understanding of communication, its evolution, technological developments with particular reference to its application in the electronic media and information technology. It also offers an opportunity for an in-depth study of mass communication as part of dissertation work.
