Author: Muhammadali N

Thesis Superisor: Prof. Syed Amjed Ahmed

Year: 2008

Abstract: The study generally aimed to examine the role of KSSP (Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishath)’s communication policies and strategies in popularising science among rural people. It specifically aimed to find out the use of print and traditional media of KSSP as science information source and to identify the socio demographic variables that influenced the use of KSSP print and traditional media. The study analysed the audience’ perceived satisfaction with KSSP media in terms of their form and content. The study identified the pattern of the use of non-KSSP communication channels as science information sources by rural people. It further measures the level of Public  Understanding of Science (PUS) among users and non-users of KSSP communication channels in rural area. Based on the study the researcher identified that the use of traditional media used by KSSP as an annual feature was far more popular than other media as a science information source. Contrary to the previous studies, the study found that gender had no role in defining the use pattern of KSSP science communication channels. Though the age defined the way they used KSSP’s science communication media, there was no set patters in the relationship of age with media use. The study revealed the higher popularity of KSSP’s traditional media as compared to its print media among the rural folk and found that traditional media are quite popular among the lower income groups and lower educational categories reaffirms the suitability of such channels for popularising science among rural population.
